KEYNOTE

Andrea Yaffe is the Senior Advisor to the ASD for Space Policy.  In this role, she is responsible for supporting the ASD for Space Policy on all matters under the ASD’s purview, to include nuclear deterrence, countering weapons of mass destruction, space, and missile defense policies.

Ms. Yaffe came to that capacity after servicing as the National Security Council’s Director for Space Policy.  In that role she served as the lead advisor to the National Security Advisor on all matters related to outer space policy.  She took on that challenge after serving as the Director for Space Strategy and Plans in OUSDP.  As Director for Space Strategy and Plans, she led a team that developed and shaped Department of Defense space policies and strategies and contributed to broader U.S. Government space strategies.

Prior to that role, she served for five years as the Director of Transnational Threats in OUSDP’s Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD) office.  Her team served as the OUSDP lead for WMD interdiction, multinational arms control, denying Iran a nuclear weapons capability, and mitigating North Korea-related WMD threats.

She began her tenure working CWMD issues as a Foreign Policy Advisor on the DoD Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) policy team.  She joined the CTR team after serving as Deputy Director of the OUSDP Pakistan team, working mostly on nuclear issues during two of the bilateral relationship’s most challenging years.

Before joining DoD, Andrea was an Associate Vice President at The Cohen Group, helping to build the firm’s India practice, while also working on Middle East and homeland security issues for clients.  She started her career as a legislative correspondent for Senator Carl Levin.

Andrea has a BA in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University and an MA in Security Policy Studies from George Washington University.
